All 9th Grade wind, percussion, guard, & majorette students:

Please plan to attend orientation with your parent/guardian!  Here are a few protips I picked up for you during the meeting today with admin:

  • Park in the student parking lot – that’s the side with the auditorium.
  • Enter the building using the atrium door, which is the door at the covered walkway between the school building and the auditorium.
  • There are two entrances to the gym in the atrium – a lot of folks will all head for the closest one.  Head for the other one and sit on the far side of the gym.  That’ll give you the best view of the band. 🙂
  • You will not receive your class schedule at orientation, but you will get an alphabetized list of homeroom assignments and room numbers.  You will be able to locate your homeroom classroom during the tour portion of the event.
  • Please pay attention when they speak about dress code, headphones, tardies, skipping, etc.  You *will* get written up in high school for these things!
  • Chromebooks: you’ll most likely receive your Chromebook the first full week of school.  Don’t panic!
  • After everyone speaks you’ll be released to tour the campus.  You can walk around yourself (you’ll be provided a map) or you can find a student volunteer to take you around campus.  We recommend using this time to find your homeroom classroom, and getting a good grasp of how to get there from whichever entrance you’ll use on a school day (bus ramp, front door, band room, etc.).

Everyone: FOCUS schedules before 8/10 can & will change!

Once your schedule becomes visible in FOCUS please be aware that it can and almost certainly will change before homeroom the first day of school.  The schedule that you are given in homeroom on 8/10 is what you need to start with.

Everyone: schedules for the first week of school

This is unrelated to the meeting and orientation – this is Ms. Smith speaking from years of first days of school at Booker T.  Please pardon the all caps, but this needs to be said in my outside voice:

SCHEDULES WILL BE A TRAIN WRECK

You may have 3 2nd period classes, no 3rd period class, or 5 math classes.  DON’T PANIC!

There will be very clear instructions given during homeroom regarding what to do in the event of schedule wackiness.  Here’s another important thing to remember:

ALL SCHEDULES WILL BE FIXED, BUT THE MOST BROKEN WILL BE FIXED FIRST

It’s like triage – you start with the folks that are in the most danger first.  They need to address students with whole missing periods first, then students with extra periods, and then the ones with 5 math classes.  Do not ask to go to get in line for scheule changes “because I don’t like this teacher” or “I don’t like math” or “science is hard” or the like.

What if band isn’t on my schedule?

Come see us in the band office before reheasal.  We’ll put in a request to see if it was an oversight or a schedule conflict.  You are still fully expected at rehearsal, by the way, class or no class!
