When school starts…

Please mark your calendars, say your prayers, and prepare your minds and bodies for the following events:

FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL

  • Wednesday, 8/11: first day of school, no after-school rehearsal
  • Thursday, 8/12 3:30-6pm: Marching camp – required of every wind player, percussion player, and guard member in the BTWHS band. Rain or shine.
    • Students MUST bring clothes to change into: athletic clothes (gym shorts, basketball shorts, t-shirt, etc.  No jeans.), athletic shoes (never sandals, slides, Crocs, etc.).  We will assign band lockers for students to keep their clothes in.
    • Students MUST bring an insulated, refillable water jug with their name on it.  We do not know what the district’s COVID-related rules will be regarding community refill coolers, so a larger jug would be best.  Here’s a 1-gallon jug at WalMart for $8: https://bit.ly/3hyeUMQ  It doesn’t have to be that one – it’s just an example.
    • We recommend hats (wear your own shade), sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.  We will be outside amost exclusively and you must be ready.
  • Friday, 8/13 3:30-6pm: Marching camp – required of every wind player, percussion player, and guard member in the BTWHS band. Rain or shine. (same as the previous day)
  • Saturday, 8/14 8am-4pm: Mandatory show camp – required of every wind player, percussion player, and guard member in the BTWHS band.  Rain or shine.  Yep, that’s a Saturday.  Outside of MPAs & the Christmas Parade this is probably going to be the only Saturday event, AND it’s replacing 8 weekday rehearsals, so…
    • We will learn the drill to the pre-game show AND the halftime show.  All in one day.
      • If you do not attend, you will not have a position in the show. Clear your calandar NOW to ensure you can attend.
    • Wear athletic clothes & shoes, bring your hat & sunglasses, and bring sunscreen.  Everyone will also need a fully charged cell phone as drill will be sent out electronically and students will set themselves in the drill using phones.
    • Lunch will be provided by the Boosters.  Please let us know now of any food requirements so we can plan accordingly!

SECOND WEEK OF SCHOOL:

  • Tuesday, 8/17 3:30-6pm: Mandatory show camp – required of every wind player, percussion player, and guard member in the BTWHS band. Rain or shine.
    • Athletic clothes, shoes, water jug, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.  Y’all know the drill by now.  BRING THEM!

ALL WEEKS AFTER THROUGH MARCHING SEASON:

    • THURSDAY RULE: any student that misses Thursday rehearsal, regardless of reason, is not allowed to march Friday night for their safety.

ABSENCES:

Please plan appointments and other scheduled events around these rehearsals on Mondays or Wednesdays.  Band is a team sport and every student on the field relies on the students to their left and right to ensure they are in the right spot.  That’s hard to do when the student next to them is absent.

In the event of doctor appointments, emergencies, etc. that cannot be rescheduled please bring a note from the doctor that includes the student’s name & the date of the appointment on the doctor’s letterhead.  It will need to be placed in the dropbox in the bandroom office wall where cash & check payments are placed.  I’ll process them weekly as I process payments and the absence will be noted as excused.

SPORTS/CLUBS/TUTORING/ETC.

If you are on a sports team whose practices coincide with ours it is YOUR responsibility to make arrangments with both Mr. Young and your coach to split rehearsals or split days.  YOU communicate and make arrangemnts.  Know both scheduled ahead of time and communicate with both instructors.

If your club offers meetings before school rather than after, please use that option.  When you can’t avoid an after school meeting, please make the club sponsor aware that you must leave by 3:50.  You are expected to be fully dressed out and on the drivers ed range by 4pm with your instrument/equipment and ready to go.

If you are meeting a school-sponsored tutor after school on a Tuesday or Thursday please have your parents email Mr. Young ([email protected]) with the schedule.
